NZIV - What you need to know

Welcome to the July NZIV newsletter.
In case you missed my brief address at conference I have recently taken over as NZIV president from Adam Binns. Thanks to Adam for his tenure.
We understand that as a profession there is significant time pressure with urgent reporting and deadlines. Significant amounts of emails and communication aren’t helpful especially when all the information is available through the PINZ & NZIV websites.
With that in mind, we have streamlined this newsletter, to focus our efforts on what you need to know from us, at the time you need it, with links for your perusal if you want the full detail.
This approach will be under regular review, as your feedback is incredibly important to us.
I welcome correspondence from members on any issues.

2022 CPD POLICY UPDATE

The NZIV regular review of CPD policy has resulted in a number of small changes following member feedback.
The new NZIV policy will be in effect from 1 January 2023 for the 2023 CPD calendar year and beyond.
NZIV considered all comments from members including wide consultation, an online survey, and face-to-face engagement and will continue to listen to member feedback through the review cycle.

Key changes
  • The current annual allowance of a maximum of 5 non-verified CPD points from any one type of activity or any one source of learning in a calendar year has been increased to a maximum of 10 CPD points.
  • The ability to carry over up to 5 non-verified CPD points from the previous year has been restored.
  • Clarification around the bi-annual (every two years) mandatory requirement to complete both the Standards module and the Ethics modules being “unlinked” and considered separately as distinct, independent requirements.
  • Clarification that NZIV strongly encourage members to complete the compulsory NZIV approved Ethics CPD event and the NZIV approved Standards CPD event face-to-face but, where this is not possible, members are able to complete these events online.
  • Future CPD Policy reviews are to be conducted on a bi-annual (every two years) basis.

Case Law Database
Trial & Evaluation

An Invitation to members:

The New Zealand Institute of Valuers is seeking members to participate in a six week trial of a new case law library database (Westlaw) that Council is evaluating.

We are keen to get a mix of users, from those who might use the database frequently - to those that might just use it occasionally.

At the end of the trial, our participants will agree to be surveyed on their experience.  We do not expect this to be a long process.

If you wish to become one of our test pilots for this new initiative, or want some more information please email us:

Stan Ralston (FNZIV) 1928 - 2022
It is with sadness we report the recent passing of Stanley Walter Alexander Ralston.
Stan was a former Valuer General (1986-88), a fierce supporter of the Institute (joined 1947), registered in 1959, and was advanced to Fellow in 1974.
A John M Harcourt Memorial Award Winner in 1980, he was incredibly passionate about education and retired in 1989.
His handwritten letter of resignation from the Institute in 1999 is HERE.
